Professor Patrick Hesp - B.A., M.A.(hons), PhD

Patrick Hesp, an associate of Coastal Systems Ltd, is Chair of the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisanna State University (LSU). Hesp is also the R.J. Russell Professor at LSU and an internationally recognised expert in coastal dune geomorphology, dynamics and management. In addition, his coastal specialization covers surf zone and beach hazard assessment, coastal land capability and environmental impact assessment.

Dr Hesp has an international reputation in dune research which he has conducted in over 20 counties. His work covers all aspects of aeolian processes on foredunes and coastal dunes, and also beach-dune interactions. Prior to being appointed at LSU, he lectured and researched at the University of Sydney , Macquarie University , National University of Singapore, University of Amsterdam, A.I.T. (Thailand) and Massey University . He has received visiting fellowships to the University of Port Elizabeth (South Africa), the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), Institute of Ecology (Mexico), University of the Negev (Israel) and UFRGS (Brazil), and Academy of Science Fellowships in both Australia and China. He currently has joint research links with colleagues at the Institute of Ecology ( Mexico ), University of Guleph ( Canada ), and The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil.

Applied research projects include: investigations into terrestrial geomorphology and potential development sites at the Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia; assessment of sediment dynamics, and the effects of proposed construction works within the Port Hacking estuary, Sydney; assessment of landfill disposal options at Lady Robinson's Beach, Botany Bay; review of landform stability and development suitability at Prevelly Park, Western Australia; Himatangi Sand Dunes management report; dune re-shaping and Spinifex planting trial at Oakura, Taranaki; dune re-shaping at East End Beach, New Plymouth; assessment on the stability of the coastal strip between Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste, Western Australia; development of a classification and land use capability scheme for Western Australia coastal lands with particular application to urban sub-division. Dr Hesp has published over 180 books, chapters and research articles.
